The book contains a wealth of national characteristic words and provides an important role in promoting the dissemination of Chinese minority cultures. Therefore, making an in-depth exploration of the translation of these national characteristic words in the English version is particularly crucial. Social semiotics is the study of the significance of symbols in social culture and context, beyond the pure language level, and translation is both a linguistic activity and a symbolic activity, which involves the mutual transformation between different languages. This article, based on social semiotics, analyzes the English translation of The Last Quarter of the Moon from the aspects of referential meaning, linguistic meaning, and pragmatic meaning, explores the transmission of the meaning of its national characteristic words and the selection of translation strategies, so as to provides reference and inspiration for the translation of texts related to national culture.
文化负载词饱含文化信息,因此一直是翻译领域的棘手难题。社会符号学作为一种跨学科的理论,为翻译研究提供了一个全新的视角,对文化负载词的翻译具有指导意义。文章以莫里斯的社会符号学为理论基础,以“意义相符,功能相似”为评价标准,使用量化和案例分析的研究方法,分析得出韩语作品《82年生的金智英》的汉语译者尹嘉玄更注重语用意义和指称意义的传达,倾向于异化策略以保留异质文化的风味。英语译者杰米·张(Jamie Chang)则将传达言内意义置于首位,语用意义次之,注重译文的可读性,更多采用归化的翻译策略以创造读者友好型译文。由于目的不一,两位译者对源语意义和功能的传达有主次之分,但大体上兼顾得当,为文学翻译提供了一定的参考价值。Cultural-loaded words are full of cultural information, so they have always been a thorny problem in the field of translation. As an interdisciplinary theory, sociosemiotics provides a new perspective for translation research, and is of guiding significance to the translation of cultural-loaded words. Based on Morris’s sociosemiotics as the theoretical foundation and the evaluation criteria of “meaning correspondence and functional equivalence”, using quantitative and case study research methods, the article analyzes and concludes that Yin Jiaxuan, the Chinese translator of the Korean work Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, pays more attention to conveying pragmatic and referential meaning, and tends to adopt the strategy of foreignization in order to preserve the flavor of the heterogeneous culture. The English translator Jamie Chang, on the other hand, puts the conveyance of linguistic meaning first, followed by pragmatic meaning, focuses on the readability of the translation, and adopts more domestication strategies to create a reader-friendly text.
